Why is my C-section scar itchy? Causes, Treatment and Relief
If you have an itchy C-section scar, you're not alone. Itching, pain, numbness and sensitivity are some of the most common symptoms women experience during C-section recovery.
For some mums, C-section scar itching settles within a few weeks. For others, it can continue for months or even years after their caesarean birth, which can be frustrating and difficult to understand.
The good news is that an itchy C-section scar is usually a normal part of the healing process. Understanding why your scar itches and what you can do to relieve it can help you feel more confident during your recovery.
Why Is My C-Section Scar Itchy?
Research shows that symptoms such as itching, pain and altered sensation can affect quality of life after a C-section. There are several reasons why your C-section scar may feel itchy.
1. Your C-Section Scar Is Healing
Although your C-section incision is mostly healed by around 6 weeks postpartum, scar tissue continues to remodel and mature for up to 2 years after surgery.
During the healing process, your body releases inflammatory chemicals, including histamine, which can trigger an itchy sensation. At the same time, the nerves around your scar are healing and adapting, which can make your scar feel itchy, tingly, numb or sensitive.
This type of itching is especially common during the first 6 months after a C-section.
2. Skin Irritation Around the Scar
In the early weeks after surgery, C-section scar itching may also be caused by:
- A reaction to dressings or surgical adhesives
- Clothing rubbing on the scar area
- Pubic hair growing back after shaving before surgery
- Dry or sensitive skin around the incision
3. Tight Scar Tissue
If you have an itchy C-section scar months or years later, tight scar tissue may be contributing to your symptoms.
As scar tissue forms and matures, it can create tension within the skin and deeper layers of tissue. This tightness can lead to ongoing sensations of itching, pulling, discomfort or sensitivity long after the scar appears healed.
How Can I Stop My C-Section Scar From Itching?
Avoid Scratching Your Scar
As tempting as it may be, try not to scratch your scar. Scratching can further irritate the skin, delay healing and increase the risk of infection.
Keep the Area Clean and Dry
If you have a C-section overhang, gently lift the skin and carefully pat the area dry after showering to reduce moisture and irritation.
Try Cold Therapy
Applying a cool gel pack over the scar may help reduce itching and discomfort.
Important: Always wrap the gel pack in a towel or cover first. Never apply ice directly to the skin, especially if you still have numbness around your scar.
Moisturise the Skin
Applying a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser or aqueous cream can help reduce dryness and irritation around the scar.
Consider Silicone Therapy
Silicone scar strips and silicone gels can support scar healing and may help reduce itching, discomfort and scar sensitivity.
Start Scar Massage
Scar massage is one of the most effective ways to manage persistent scar symptoms.
Research has shown that scar massage can help reduce:
- Itching
- Pain
- Tightness
- Sensitivity
- Anxiety associated with scars
Once you've been cleared by your healthcare provider, gentle scar massage can help improve tissue mobility and reduce uncomfortable symptoms.

When Should I See a Doctor About My Itchy C-Section Scar?
Speak with your doctor or healthcare provider if your C-section scar itchiness is:
- Severe or worsening
- Associated with redness, swelling or discharge
- Affecting your sleep or quality of life
- Accompanied by increasing pain
In some cases, additional treatment or medication may be recommended.
The Bottom Line
An itchy C-section scar is very common and is usually a normal part of the healing process. Whether your scar is newly healed or several years old, symptoms such as itching, tightness and sensitivity can often be improved with appropriate scar care, silicone therapy and scar massage.
Remember, although your skin may appear healed after a few weeks, your C-section scar continues to remodel and mature for up to two years after surgery.
